Bill Williamson and David Tepe shooting the yardages

On the same weekend Tiger Woods roared back to begin the reclamation of his past dominance, a new champion was crowned in the local Cincinnati golf scene. After six days and eight rounds, the 103rd annual Tony Blom Metropolitan Amateur Championship etched a new name into history, that of Bill Williamson.

No longer the “best player to have never won,” in his 11th try, 35-year-old Williamson defeated University of Cincinnati’s David Tepe 1-up on the 18th hole at Summit Hills Country Club. After taking the lead with a birdie on No. 15, Williamson played steady the rest of his round and secured the win with a three-footer for par on the final hole of competition.

For many years Williamson has been in the thick of things. He’s been in it — always close but never close enough. On Saturday, however, the golf gods were smiling. For this year, things were different. Williamson caught the necessary breaks as is essential in this fickle game called golf, and he forever carved his name alongside a list of great champions.

As for Tepe, he’s only heading into his senior year, so it’s safe to say there is still plenty of history to unfold.
