July 2, 2012
You might not think a day that starts with a 4-mile run and ends with a block party is all in support of a stellar cause, i.e., kicking cancer to the curb, but the good folks from the Queen City have surprised you once again. That’s right, I’m talking about the annual Hyde Park Blast, which was started by Cheryl Koopman and Chad Sims in 2001.
They wanted to create an environment where the community could have fun, be active and raise money. Done and done. Since the event’s inception, it’s raised over $260,000. TAKE THAT CANCER!
Even a crazy thunderstorm that left thousands without power did not stop enthusiasm for Saturday’s blast off.
The schedule of events included:
8 a.m. – 4 mile Run/Walk
10 a.m. – Kids Races
11 a.m. – Graeter’s Brain Freeze Ice Cream Eating Contest
12 p.m. – Gold Star Chili Coney Eating Contest
12 p.m. – Zumba, Spinning, Ping Pong, Yoga, and Cross Fit
4 p.m. - Cycling Criterium races with the pro men’s race at 8 p.m.
6 p.m. to midnight – Block Party with Cowboy Mouth
The pictures from the Gold Star Chili eating contest are golden.
